MOXI vs. Clear + Brilliant: The Pre-Juvenation Guide for Younger Skin

MOXI and Clear + Brilliant are both gentle, low-downtime lasers designed for patients who want to prevent visible signs of aging rather than correct advanced damage. MOXI uses a single wavelength to target early pigment and melasma-associated discoloration over a series of sessions, while Clear + Brilliant’s dual-wavelength system can address pigment and early texture change in the same visit.

“Prejuvenation” has become one of the most searched terms among patients in their late 20s and 30s. Rather than waiting for sun damage, fine lines, or uneven tone to become visible, more patients are choosing to start light, preventive laser treatments early.

MOXI and Clear + Brilliant are the two most commonly compared entry-level lasers for exactly this purpose. They’re often discussed as interchangeable, but they aren’t identical, and the differences matter depending on what a patient is trying to prevent or treat.

MOXI: A Single Wavelength Built for Speed

MOXI is Sciton’s non-ablative fractional laser, delivered on the same JOULE platform as BBL and Halo. It operates at 1927 nm, a wavelength with high affinity for water that concentrates energy near the surface, roughly the top 0.2 millimeters of skin.

That shallow, precise depth makes MOXI a treatment option for early sun damage, superficial pigmentation, and melasma-associated dyspigmentation. Each session typically involves multiple passes of the device over the treatment area, and providers generally recommend a series of sessions rather than a single visit to build toward a noticeable result.

Recovery is minimal. Most patients experience mild pinkness and light bronzing that flakes away within three to five days, with little to no downtime.

Clear + Brilliant: Two Wavelengths in One System

Clear + Brilliant, made by Solta Medical, received FDA clearance in 2011 and has become an established option in prejuvenation treatment. A single visit can incorporate two wavelengths, each targeting a different depth:

  • 1927 nm - targets the same superficial pigment layer as MOXI, treating sun spots and early discoloration.
  • 1440 nm - reaches roughly twice as deep, into the upper dermis, stimulating collagen production and softening the look of fine lines.

Because both wavelengths can be used in the same session, some patients address pigment and early texture concerns together rather than needing two separate treatment approaches.

Which One Should You Choose?

For patients whose main concern is early pigment or melasma-associated discoloration, and who want the gentlest, fastest-recovery option, MOXI alone is often the better starting point.

For patients who also want to start addressing fine lines or early texture changes alongside pigment, the dual-wavelength approach of Clear + Brilliant can address both in a single visit.

Many providers also use MOXI and Clear + Brilliant as building blocks within a longer-term skin plan, layering them with treatments like BBL or Halo as a patient’s skin changes over time.

Frequently asked questions

Melasma is a chronic, hormonally influenced condition with no permanent cure, and it can worsen with heat or aggressive laser settings regardless of the device used. Because MOXI's 1927 nm wavelength targets water rather than melanin directly, it's often considered a comparatively lower-risk option for melasma-prone skin when used conservatively by an experienced provider - but it isn't guaranteed to improve melasma, and outcomes vary significantly from patient to patient. Anyone with melasma should be evaluated individually, and settings adjusted carefully, before starting any laser treatment.

Both are low-downtime, typically one to three days of mild redness or bronzing. Clear + Brilliant's deeper 1440 nm handpiece can extend recovery slightly compared with MOXI alone.

Prejuvenation is usually approached as an ongoing routine rather than a fixed course. Many patients schedule sessions every few months as part of regular skin maintenance.

Yes. Since both target similar superficial concerns, some patients alternate or combine them based on how their skin responds and what a provider recommends at each visit.
